PricewaterhouseCoopers Excellence in Franchising Awards 2005
Nominations closed 21 May 2005.
Over 100 identities involved in all aspects of the sector have been invited to submit to the FCA a list of the 10 franchise systems they believe are most worthy of the honour of being named Franchisor of the Year at the forthcoming NFC05 Convention. Results will be collated and the top six scorers invited to provide a written submission addressing certain criteria. Judges in senior roles in all key walks of the sector will assess these submissions and decide the winner of the major award. This year there will not be National Franchisors of the Year in individual categories (eg Mobile Systems, Retail) - only one, the best of the best.
This:
Makes the process more democratic and less potentially political (nominators have no role in the actual judging process)
Saves many franchisors frustrating time and effort in preparing complex submissions fruitlessly
Vastly eases the reading and assessment load on judges, enabling more closely considered appraisal
Encourages the participation of worthy franchisors who might not otherwise have nominated
Eliminates public and media confusion over who is Australian Franchisor of the Year by eliminating subsidiary categories from the national awards process
PricewaterhouseCoopers Franchisee of the Year 2005 (Regional/National)

To ensure a fair and objective assessment process, candidates were required to make evidence available to support their responses.

Australian Franchise Hall of Fame
Nominations closed 30 June 2005.
The Australian Franchise Hall of Fame honours the sector's legends.
When created, in 2003, the selection panel searched back to the origins of franchising in Australia and by meticulous process of elimination identified the ground-breakers, influencers, quiet achievers, selfless contributors and outstanding performers who endured the trials and built the foundations of the sector's success.
The fact that today, there are just 22 names in the Hall of Fame (around one for every year of Australian franchising) speaks for the standards applied.
You are welcome to nominate a franchise identity who makes you proud, for induction into the Hall of Fame, or for that matter, you may nominate yourself. Nominees are encouraged (from all facets of the sector) who have made a significant contribution to franchising including but not exclusive to franchisors, franchisees, masters franchisees, international franchisors operating in Australia, staff, suppliers, academics, consultants, politicians, bankers or bureaucrats; in fact, any contributor to the growth of Australian franchising.
Nominations are to be made in writing to:
Hall of Fame
Franchise Council of Australia
PO Box 2195
Malvern East 3143
Or via fax on 03 9509 5159.
Each nomination will be considered by the current Hall of Fame members, closing June 30th, with 2005 inductee/s announced at the NFC05 Chairman's Dinner at the Australian War Memorial.
In summary, key changes are:
National Franchisor of the Year nominations/submissions limited to six, those six being selected by democratic process involving a wide-ranging selection of over 100 sector identities. Submissions and judging processes unchanged from there.
Elimination of national ââ¬Ëin category' Franchisor of the Year awards.
Individual State Chapters might choose to recommend their own awards processes for franchisors but this will have no further bearing on the national awards.
Regional awards emphasis to be on franchisees and Women in Franchising.
Franchisee of the Year nominations confined to individual systems' own most recent declared Franchisee of the Year. Nominations evaluated by interview by telephone and or email saving busy franchisees' time. Successful Regional Franchisees of the Year treated to a generous convention package. National Franchisee of the Year to be announced at NFC05.
These changes are designed to make the awards process simpler, less effort for franchisees, franchisors and judges, and fairer to the franchising community across the board. There are, of course, fewer categories to contend for, but this will reduce confusion. In the past, a plethora of franchise systems have been claiming to be Franchisor of the Year - with few observers astute enough to enquire ââ¬ËYes but in which Region/Category'.
In short, the changes provide for less hassle and expense all round, greater value for the ultimate award winners, and stronger credibility for the franchising sector as a whole.
Proudly sponsor the FCA National Awards for 2005

Richard Ellmers
Aussie Pooch Mobile
Profile Name: Richard Ellmers
Position: Regional Franchisee Aussie Pooch Mobile Gold Coast QLD.
My background before joining the Aussie Pooch Mobile team is not a long story, it starts in a little town in New Zealand where I used my love of the game of golf to start my working life. For nearly ten years I was Golf Course Greenkeeper and progressed to be 2IC before I left to take a gamble on a new concept in New Zealand called lawn-mowing franchising. This was a big gamble on my part as I was leaving my hometown and moving to the city of Hamilton.
Over a period of three years I built this franchise up to be a very successful business with two guys working one truck while I was specialising in laying new lawns and tractor work. After getting disillusioned with the management of the franchise system and a breakdown in communication between other franchisees, I sold the business and became a Head Gardener in the Hamilton City Council. Within a short period of time I found myself the turf consultant for the council in the inner city areas, however I soon found myself needing new challenge's so I sold up and moved with my wife to Australia.
Upon arriving in Australia and after my first ever holiday with my wife I soon needed something to do. My wife Annie was the one who discovered Aussie Pooch Mobile and suggested that with my love of dogs this would be like playing every day and be in the great outdoors for I really loved the Queensland weather. I hoped there would be more to this than just bathing dogs, I need to be challenged. Christine Taylor from Aussie Pooch Mobile handed me the challenge and welcomed me to the team. I was convinced that I had found it in Aussie Pooch Mobile so this is why I purchased the franchise of the Gold Coast.
