Key Messages From ASBFEO & the ACCC

Join us for an informal gathering, catch up and mingle with other franchise industry participants and talk about issues that are on your mind.

The August monthly Coffee Catch-Up features guest speakers, Dr. Craig Latham, the Deputy Ombudsman from the office of the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman's (ASBFEO) office and Ms. Kristie Piniuta, the Director of the Small Business and Industry Codes Team at the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

Topics of discussion will include:

  • What are the hot topic issues ASBFEO thinks are affecting small business and franchising and what is being done;
  • How is the ACCC progressing its enforcement priorities this year;
  • How the ASBFEO is dealing with referrals to mediation to the Franchising Mediation Adviser;
  • What the collective bargaining exemption for franchising means and how it applies;
  • Which issues arise repeatedly for the ASBFEO and what recommendations can be given to small businesses / franchises;
  • The key messages for franchising / small business from the ACCC

Guest Speakers

Dr. Craig Latham

Deputy, Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman

Craig's experience stretches across business, academia and the public service in Australia and New Zealand.  He has specialist expertise in commercial and tax law, regulatory reform, and private sector and cross-government collaboration.  In his current role, Craig has a particular focus on speedy and low cost dispute resolution for small business and family enterprise.

Craig holds undergraduate degrees in economics and law, a Masters of Law and a Doctorate of Philosophy focussed on regulatory systems.


Kristie Piniuta

ACCC Director, Small Business & Industry Codes Team

Kristie Piniuta is the Director of the Small Business & Industry Codes (SBIC) team.  The SBIC team focuses on education and engagement activities to assist  small business and industry better understand their rights and obligations under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 and the industry codes. The team undertakes regular compliance checks on traders and are available to assist with franchising and small business issues generally. The SBIC team also works with the ACCC Deputy Chair Mick Keogh including by providing the secretariat function for the Small Business and Franchising Consultative Committee (SBFCC) meetings.

Prior to starting at the ACCC, Kristie Piniuta worked in various legal roles over the past 14 years including as General Counsel of a large franchisor network during its critical growth phase and as Principal of a legal practice.
