QLD Luncheon: Growing Franchising 2018 20/7/2018

The FCA QLD-NT Chapter Committee is delighted to present a special luncheon event being held at the Brisbane Convention Centre on Friday 20 July.

Lunch will commence with an update on the franchise sector by Mary Aldred, CEO, Franchise Council of Australia, which will be followed by a facilitated panel fielding questions and offering insights into what it takes to grow a franchise in the current business environment.

Facilitated by Lee Moore, Astral Pool, this session features an outstanding panel:

Chris Mavris, CEO, Soul Origin, Emerging Franchisor of the Year 2017

CEO Chris Mavris is one of Australian franchising's recognised QSR experts. His hands-on knowledge, dedication to excellence, and his Return on Integrity philosophy has resulted in Soul Origin being named Australia's Emerging Franchisor of 2017.

Integrity is central to everything Chris and Soul Origin do, resulting in a transparent, motivated and engaged network of franchise/business partners and team members. Chris' leadership has seen the strategic expansion of Soul Origin from just three stores when he joined the business in 2013 to its current 90 plus franchise outlets. Chris has also overseen investment in the key systems, training and technology to ensure Soul Origin's reputation for excellence and innovation is maintained.

Chris brings a lifetime in food retailing to the Soul Origin executive team. In the 23 years since opening his first cafe in 1991, Chris has owned and operated numerous food retail establishments, both independent and franchised operations, all of them run profitably and successfully. He currently owns and runs a very successful high-volume cafes/espresso bars in Sydney's CBD.

His expertise in franchising is also extensive. During his 9 ½ year tenure with the Michel's Patisserie franchise network from 1995, Chris ran and owned three Michel's franchises (Marrickville Metro, Bondi Junction and Westfield Eastgardens) and achieved a multitude of great successes. His stores were number 1 in coffee and cake purchases nationwide and he was awarded Best New Franchise and Franchisee of the Year (achieved in consecutive years) and was also the first franchisee to achieve multiple Franchisee of the Year Awards.

Rowan Hodge, General Manager, Battery World

Rowan Hodge is the current President of the Australian Retailers Association, and is a member of the Chief Executive Syndicate under the Franchise Council of Australia. He has spent over two decades in franchising, as both franchisor and multi-unit franchisee, in Australia and New Zealand, and has also had extensive international franchise experience across Asia, Western Europe and the USA.

Rowan has worked for Domino's Pizza, Quest Serviced Apartments, and is currently the General Manager of the wholly franchised 109 store Battery World chain a role he has held since 2014. He is an active member of the Battery Stewardship Council.

Rowan is a father and husband, and a home renovator. And, wherever time permits, he also loves to write novels and fly gyrocopters.

Tony Cotter, National Manager Franchising, ANZ

Tony has been leading the ANZ strategy in the Franchise community since 2013 although previously being involved with the franchise arena for ANZ in 2008-2010.

Tony's passion and drive has seen ANZ growth in the Franchise community during the past 3 years expand the franchise systems on ANZ panel significantly to circa 80+ Franchise systems and still increasing. 

Tony is an experienced banker of over 30 years with a strong connection to the franchise community.

Ben Johnston, Head of SEEK Business

Ben started his career at Grant Thornton focusing on tax and wealth planning for family owned businesses. Qualifying as a Chartered Accountant and having completed a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investments, Ben moved into Financial Services working at JBWere Goldman Sachs and then HSBC in London. An exciting opportunity to move into media and then retail, saw Ben manage a financial review of Channel 4 Television Corporation and then later on move to The Netherlands to work for Nike at their European Headquarters.

More recently, having completed his MBA, Ben now is Head of SEEK Business  and is extremely passionate about giving the Australian population a chance to be their own boss, whether it be a standalone business or a franchise. Ben has two children and when he has time to himself, loves to run and keep fit. Ben has a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting & Finance) from Monash University.
