Michael Atkins, McDonald's Multi Site Franchisee

Michael's career started in hotel management in Sydney.  He had a strong desire to own his own business and took on a senior management role with McDonald's in 1985 which bought him to the Queensland.

A partnership in several franchises quickly followed which eventually lead to the opportunity to open the first McDonald's stores in the Northern Territory in 1994. He and his wife developed the McDonald's brand in the Top End before returning to the Gold Coast in 2001. He currently owns 5 franchises across the northern Gold Coast with approximately 400 employees.

For more than 15 years Michael has been very active as a senior licensee within the McDonald's community and has sat on and chaired various state and national committees and leadership groups.

Murray d'Almeida, founder of Retail Food Group, including Donut King, BB's Espresso and other brands & 2016 FCA Hall of Fame Inductee

Murray d'Almeida has been involved directly and indirectly in the Australian Franchise sector since 1978 and became a member of the FAANZ in its second year of inception.

He commenced his career in Perth with a firm of Chartered Accountants before moving into a broad range of commercial and financial reporting positions with two major USA based mining companies. In 1972, with his brother, Murray opened the first Baker's Bun Hot Bread Kitchen in Perth. Franchising commenced in 1978 and 15 outlets were opened in Western Australia.

In 1985, he founded BB's Coffee and Croissants (later BB's Espresso) named after "Bakers Bun" Hot Bread. During this time, RFG acquired the Kool's Chicken chain and developed the "Mrs Fudge" brand.

Murray has further supported the industry by serving as a Director of FAANZ and as a Director on Griffith University's Asia Pacific Centre for Franchise Excellence. His wide ranging and diversified business and community experience has also been of benefit to our sector and members.

Troy's current role sees him leading the specialist support teams of HR, Supply Chain, Retail and Learning and Development. With a background in Education, Troy has a keen focus on the development of people and fostering teams across teams in to drive results.

Paddy Sweeney, Founder, Stain Busters

Paddy Sweeney, started Stain Busters in 1990 and the following point illustrates just how he thinks, 'He knew where his first 1000 carpet cleaning jobs were coming from before he ever knew how to clean a carpet'. He drove the business on the premise, 'we are not in the business of cleaning carpets, we are in the business of getting carpets to clean'. He refers this to the first cause in the process of business. Unless this is flowing everything else will be difficult.

Paddy set a goal to earn a significant predetermined income and have the business work without him being there..his time line was three years. The time line was too short, it took twelve years and he achieved this in 2002. He set up a two tier Master Franchise Administration approach and stepped out of the picture. For 15 years his only involvement has been to organise the annual conference.

Things continued to grow for a number of years and then they plateaued. After the plateau came declining revenues. Two years ago he realised he had to do something to turn it around. Despite his best efforts he could not get his overall Master Franchisee or State and New Zealand Master Franchisees to buy into a new, totally different business model.

Late last year he started to buy back his Master Franchisees and created a leading edge low entry model with a five year guaranteed income and 80% of the work found. Plus; all money handling and paper work is carried out by another new part of the innovative model called a 'Super Franchise'. This too is a leading edge model and reinvents the Master Franchisee previously used.

Brendan Felstead, Franchisee BforB Brisbane CBD, Fortitude Valley and Bowen Hills

Brendan Felstead has an exhaustive career across multiple sectors, working in a range of sales and management roles which have underpinned his deep understanding of what makes business work. Graduating with a Bachelor of Business, Management and e-Business, Brendan's roles with iconic brands have layered technical and theoretical learning with an understanding of what drives success. He is passionate about the critical role rapport and relationship building plays.

His commitment to driving improvement underpins his involvement with Chambers of Commerce where he relishes the opportunity to assist small and medium business, and more recently the BforB Business group.

Brendan's initial contact with the group was as a member in the Brisbane CBD group and realising the commitment to creating success for others, it took only a matter of months for him to assume a leadership role in that group, before moving through to Local Director in 2016 and making the decision to purchase the franchise for Brisbane CBD, Fortitude Valley and Bowen Hills this year.

As a Foundation Franchisee, Brendan has worked closely with Sarah Cobb, the Australian Master Franchisor, bringing to life her vision to take the group beyond simply networking and referrals to creating a cross-member high performance culture where learning, innovation and phenomenal support underpins the initiatives currently underway to transform the way small business does business.
