Big plunge pays off

FERNY Grove couple Tony and Michelle Graham took a risk a decade ago when they quit executive positions in the corporate world and plunged in to the pool service industry with their own franchise business.

Now, the owners o f PoolWerx, based in Samford and Keperra, have floated to the top, winning the Multiunit Franchisee of the Year from the Franchise Council of Australia (FCA) at the national awards.

Ms Graham said they started a mobile-van business with five clients. At the time they had a mortgage and two young children and the risk of forfeiting two stable incomes seemed high.

But within 10 months they had grown their client base to 100 and within two years had opened their first store in Samford. Today, they operate four stores across Brisbane, including at The Gap and Indooroopilly, six vans and a client database of about 10,000.

Ms Graham said because they were new to business they saw the benefits of joining a structured franchise business environment.

It teaches you about business and it’s also good to know you have a support network,’’ she said.
