PoolWerx takes multi-unit prize

Brisbane Courier Mail

The strength of Queensland’s franchising industry has been recognised at the recent national Franchise Council of Australia awards.

Longstanding Queensland franchise PoolWerx took out the multi-unit franchisee of the year award across all brands, while its chief executive John O’Brien has been inducted into the Franchise Hall of Fame.

The distinctions come as the industry puts itself forward as an employer of choice for prospective retirees returning to the workforce to supplement retirement savings.

It also follows proactive efforts by Fair Work Australia to ensure the $128 billion industry complies with workplace laws across its networks through the introduction of the National Franchise Program.

Nationally, the employment profile of the sector is slowly changing from mostly permanent staff to a greater number of casual workers to sustain competitiveness in current economic conditions.

The number of franchise business formats has declined in recent years from 1100 in 2008, to 1025 in 2010.

The Franchise Council of Australia is hosting a dinner with Jani King chief executive Ben Stoltz in Brisbane on November 1, to discuss opportunities for franchising in Australia’s "patchwork economy".
