Franchise stars shine at Vic/Tas Excellence in Franchising Awards

Written on the 7 June 2016 by FCA Media Release

The Franchise Council of Australia (FCA) recognised franchising's best in Victoria and Tasmania at the 2016 Vic/Tas Excellence in Franchising Awards presentations in Melbourne on Monday night.

Winners at the event included Michael and Andrea Smith of Clark Rubber, who were named Vic/Tas Multi Unit Franchisee of the Year; David and Zivanja Copsey of Poolwerx, Ringwood, who took home the award for Vic/Tas Single Unit Franchisee of the Year, two or more staff; and Mark Gallagher of V.I.P. Lawns and Gardens, Nunawading, who won the Award for Vic/Tas Single Unit Franchisee of the Year, less than two staff.

Also successful on the night was Andrew Davey, franchisee of Salts of the Earth, Pakenham, who won the Vic/Tas award for Franchisee Community Responsibility and Contribution for 2016.

"We were happy to be nominated, but to win the award is quite exceptional," said Michael Smith, who together with wife Andrea, operates Clark Rubber stores in Narre Warren and Moorabbin.

The Smiths became Clark Rubber franchisees more than a decade ago, when they purchased their Narre Warren store. After more than quadrupling that store's turnover in first four years of running the business, they added the Moorabbin franchise in 2013. The pair are also now significant local employers, today providing jobs for 16 staff across both stores.

"If we are winning awards, it means we are doing something right. It's recognition for what we're achieving right across how we're running all spectrums of the business," Michael said.

Vic/Tas Single Unit Franchisee of the Year - less than two staff winner Mark Gallagher is another who has found success and job satisfaction through franchising.

"I'd risen to very senior levels in the finance and banking industry, but I was always working for somebody else and I was always doing what somebody else wanted me to do," said Mark, who has seen year on year growth in both finances and his customer base since purchasing his V.I.P. Lawns and Gardens franchise in 2013.

"I spent many years in the corporate world and who would have thought that running my own lawn and gardening business would have been where I was my happiest," Mark said.

For David and Zivanja Copsey, the support and training provided by their franchisor has been integral to the success of their Poolwerx, Ringwood, franchise, where they have enjoyed impressive growth of 20 per cent per annum over the last six years.

"The support we get from the Poolwerx team is just exceptional. We couldn't have done it without their help," said David.

The importance of his franchisor's support has also been crucial to the success of Franchisee Community Responsibility and Contribution Award winner Andrew Davey.

"There's no way I could have done this on my own, without a doubt," said Andrew, who became a Salts of the Earth franchisee in 2014 after experiencing the benefits of salt therapy on his own health firsthand.

Having worked for 16 years previously in the Fire Brigade emergency communications centre in many roles, and 19 years as a CFA volunteer, Andrew's background has always been around helping others. He has continued this as a franchisee, helping to raise $15,000 to assist with the purchase of a specialized vest to help relieve the symptoms of a young local boy with cystic fibrosis amongst a range of local community and charity activities.

Following their success, all winners have qualified as finalists for the MYOB FCA National Excellence in Franchising Awards. The Gala Awards Dinner will be held in Canberra on Tuesday 11 October at the culmination of the 2016 National Franchise Convention.
